Dr. Emily Sumner

Research Scientist

Dr. Emily Sumner is a research scientist in the Human Interactive Driving (HID) division at Toyota Research Institute (TRI). Emily researches how AI can help humans become more curious and make good decisions. 

Prior to joining TRI, Dr. Sumner was a postdoctoral scholar at UC Berkeley where she conducted research on curiosity and social influences on exploration.

Dr. Sumner has her Ph.D. in cognitive sciences from UC Irvine where she studied decision-making and risk-taking across the human lifespan. Dr. Sumner has also written and reported pieces for the NPR show The Loh Down on Science on pandemic science and science in general.
